Our Turn

IMG_0369

…For summer! Spring is in the air, won’t be long until green gets greener and patios get packed (more than they are already).

Those with autumn and winter birthdays, have you ever wanted to go outside on your birthday and not get frostbite? We have a miracle solution, it’s called the southern hemisphere. Although that won’t apply this year, because I will likely be celebrating my birthday in the Caribbean, sigh. Tough one.

So we have some home time right now between trips, Melissa has been entertaining family and we’ve been trying to get out and enjoy the weather when time allows it. My new toy is getting lots of exercise, as it turns out the iPhone is a pretty awesome camera device. Check out Hipstamatic and Plastic Bullet, reminds me of the Holga days, droppin film off at London Drugs…

Meet us in the middle…

IMG_0551

…how about Panama?

Apples and Oranges from South America. Panama has 3.5 M people including under 1.2 M who live in/around Panama City. Does that sound like a big city? Well Buenos Aires has a population of 13 M. When you look at the panorama of Panama City’s skyline, it’s hard to imagine that it only equals the population of Edmonton’s metro area…

So what’s it like? A mix of Spanish Colonial, French and American influences, nestled between the Pacific and tropical rainforest and next door to one of the modern wonders of the world, the Panama Canal. Panama City has a great mix of rhythms and themes; ‘western’ influence with all the craziness of latin america. Depending on where you set foot, you can be mingling with the ultra-rich, in the grime of city life, or a witness to cultures of the past.

IMG_8356-Edit

Over ten years ago, Panama was given the keys to the kingdom by the U.S. They now own and operate the Panama Canal, which generates over $3M a day of revenue for Panamanians; that is about $1 a day per capita! With plans to open a wider canal in 2014 along with steadily increasing their international banking footprint, Panama is sitting pretty indeed. And just because North America sneezes does not mean Panama gets a cold; the biggest customers of the Canal are of course the Chinese.

I myself didn’t have time to explore the rest of Panama, but having both coasts within 2 hours and being surrounded by rainforest is reason enough to go back and explore, not to mention that Panama City is the hub of Central America. The idiosyncrasies of latin culture are alive and well here, meaning you should expect to wait for everything. But your reward is to come away with a more open and laid back mindset. What better frame of mind to have whilst sipping a ron con coca on the patio?

Top sights in Panama City? Casco Viejo (colonial city), Canal Zone, the nightlife. Check it out on Flickr.

Alberta, Alberta, it’s been so long…

IMG_0230

A blur of dinners, visits, parties and the highway!

Finally, we had the chance to go home together and get caught up on stuff at home. Weddings, anniversaries, beer on the patio, camping, even stag party debauchery…

Great to see all of you,
don’t know when the next visit will be,
but we’ll see you then,
unless you come visit…

Wedding, the shop, hanging out in Edmonton.

Climbing on the stag in Lake Louise.

Bumming around Calgary…mostly in Bass Pro Shops…

Killing time in Toronto‘s Pearson Intl Airport…

Retiring sounds fun…

…just ask Melissa

IMG_3903

While i’m working double digit hours, she gets to cross destinations off her bucket map! As i’m writing this, she is in Mendoza, wine touring by bicycle. While I was in Chile, sweating it out, she was in the southernmost city in the world, skiing, touring and taking pictures.

But in the race of passport stamps, I am still ahead, and the gap will widen next week

Bariloche – 3 weeks of winter

IMG_7917

I had 3 weeks of winter in Bariloche, to offset the 15 months away from Canadian winter. Melissa came and visited, braving the -8 cold (ahaha) for some Patagonian lamb and to sample the local cervezerias.

A cool place to be sure; Walt Disney came up with the idea for Bambi not far from here… Also not far from here are many places where you could dissapear from civilization for whatever reason.
